Gang violence and the drug culture

I’ve been watching a lot of the History Channel’s Gangland series and Investigation Discovery’s Gang Nation lately. One thing I’ve noticed is that much of the gang violence is due, directly or indirectly, to drugs. Well, no duh.

When Prohibition was enacted, the outlaws had a ready source of easy money. Bootlegging, moonshining, the speakeasies, et al. were extremely profitable to gangsters. The associated violence that the gangsters used was almost a natural side effect; turf wars, robbing each other, fighting law enforcement, etc. were just standard business practices for many criminals. People were willing to pay big money for their illicit hooch. Criminals who were limited to small-time crimes previously found big money bootlegging alcohol. > more <

US Elections and the “Voter’s Responsibility”

I was talking to my wife today about how much I hate election years. You have a bunch of idiots spewing garbage all over TV while the media falls over itself dedicating hours of airtime restating the same “news” about the campaigns. > more <

The children need parents permission to see the health center but, because state law says health concerns are confidential, parents won’t be notified if their children are receiving the birth control devices. > more <

Teens and Accountability

With all the stories of (usually) teenage girls meeting some stranger over the Internet, I just wanted to make this statement. The girls know exactly what they are doing and therefore should be held just as accountable as the guys. Teens have been doing the same thing long before the Internet and just because they aren’t 18 yet doesn’t mean they don’t know what they are doing and what they expect to happen. > more <

More Hawaii gripes

Filed under: Gripes, Hawaii, Politics by crystalattice @ 10:09 am on October 4, 2007.

After doing a Google search on “Hawaii sucks”, I’ve found that many people have expressed opinions that match my own. I already know that many of the military people currently here and who have lived here in the past also share the exact same feeling about Hawaii. I’m surprised at how many other people resent this place. To that end, I’m going to just post bits and pieces I find in the local media and personal experiences about the lie that is “paradise”. > more <
